The Power of Generative Art in the NFT space

Juzero 2022. 3. 15. 08:08

The future of the art market may be at the intersection between a brush, Adobe, computer algorithms and the blockchain. Here is how it's going to play out.

Why are you mixing Generative Art with NFTs?

Generative Art is blossoming and currently dominating the Ethereum NFT Artspace. Aron Penne, na engineer and artist who hase been creating generative artwork since 2018 and this year has been selling algorithms as NFTs. His work has been feattured at Sotheby's and Cristie's

He used computer codes to generate a collection of paintings named Apparitions - coloful layers of repetitive lines creating dynamaic movement. This was inspiared by a Levi Walter Yaggy painting published in 1893. Using the generative art NFT paltform Art Blocks, Aaron created 1500 paintings from this algorithhms by intorducing a handpicked set of 20 colours with various underlying rules to generate a wide array of outputs.

This collection pays now the artist 5% royalties for every secondary market sale. WIth 2.8k Ether volume traded, the project has paid the artists approxiamtely USD 600,000.

I'm happy that digital artists are finally well paid!

For digital artists like Aaron Penne who have arobust background in computer programming , creating art with technology is a natural outlet that has become quite profitable due to NFT.

We can also say that NFT is definitely a new asset class. NFT investors can learn more about NFT investing in this course.

What exactly is Generative Art?

Generative Art is a dedicated attempt to use non-human systems to bring liefe into abstract imaginations while constantly manipulationg the variable possibilities.

Generative art is describe as art that has been wholly or partially produced by an autonomous system that can independently determine features of an artwork that would otherwise require decisions made directoly by the artist. The autonomous sytem may include programming language, machines, computer programs, and procedural inventions that are set in motion to produce a work of art. Generative art can be visual or audio which includes digital renderings, 3D, 2D, virutal reality, or a combination of all that can be displayed virtually or installed in physical envirionments.

In generative art, the outcome is perceived to not be in direct control of the artist, becuase the system is given a measure of autonomy, and oftentiems, the brilliance of the artwork is vluaed without examining the underlying intricate bedrock of codes. Ususally, the generative minting process involves a thoruough method whereby artists run speciic does toghether and monitor ensuing outcoems to select all outputs that appear visually interesting and good.

WHen a particualur outcome appears good, the aritst identifies the algorithm and then codes it into exsitence. Likewise, an unwanted pattern can be coded out of existence.

Generative art in itself is a fundamental mudium that challenges our concept of art cration and value, offering endless possibilities of automated artworks with every run of the program.

NFT Influences The Growth of Generative Art

The rapidly growing ecosystem of cross-dimensional digital artists has emerged as an alterenative to traditional art by broading the lens of perception. In the past, generative art was not sidely accepted, described as not being "real art" and unintersting. The NFT space is chainging how we perceived and value digital art. Thanks to NFT space, value has been made more dynamic and many digital artists are pushing the boudaries of creativity in different dimensions using new technology to reassign value to art.

NFT does not only protect the authenticity of unique art with generative artworks, the art is in the token itself, and therefore gives more novelty to its uniqueness, thus generating more value. In Auguest 2021, a user with the moniker Vincent Van Dough acquired three pieces of generative art for 600,000 USD on Art Blocks.

Becuase NFT gives more value to the arist with a huge borderless market, generative art has found a perfect synergy and a launchpad through the decentralised marketplace where value appreication is no longer limited and the art is totally embedeed in the vitual world.

History of Generative Art

Generative art has been around for a long time with reocdes from the early 1960s covering a wide range of art production like the creation of geometiric abstract art, robot painting, computer Grafik, auto illustrated picture, music randomised petry etc. However, due to the boom in the Ehtereoum NFT space, generative ar tand design have been brought into the spotlight. One of the project presently leading this blook is Art Blocks.

Before the Art Blocks, crypto punkcs were popluar on Ehtereium in 2017. The images of CryptoPunks were procedurally generated off-chain by Larva Labs and collected largely by crypto enthusiast. After the success of Cryptopunk, it was discvered that art can be directly embedded in the token where a code is written directly in the bolckchain that would eternally generate reproducible ideas. Therefore manuy coders began to creat on-chain generative arts mostly on Ehtereum. Some of the popluar on-chain arts are MoonCats, CryptoArte, Chainfaces, Avastars, Squiglly etc. In 2021 Chromie Squiggly $4637 was sold for 275,000 USD.

Generative Art in the NFT and Metaverse future

Aritsts are constantly faced with the need to create relevant works in a world where the financial interest of big businesses heavily influences the value of art. Despite this, many digital artists like Aaron Penne find it natural to express emotions through the collaboration of technology. As technology continuves to outpace human evolution, generative art seems perfect to express the synergy between man and computer where there is an appreciation for both abilities.

Generative art seems to have a promising future with the rise of the NFT and the soon to happen Metavers overatking the world.
